The new port of Boujdour, today ready and which only asks to be inaugurated, as noted by a delegation of representatives of the main national press organs, consecrates the right to development through the prosperity of which it is the engine.
The creation of an economic hub in an area, moreover urban or freshly urbanised, allows access to a source of income and therefore to a social status, two prerequisites for a decent life and two key elements on the path to the preservation of the citizen's dignity.
If the National Ports Agency, project owner of this project, with which the Maritime Fisheries department and the Agency for the Development of the Southern Provinces are also associated, chose as a slogan for its action in this region "the port tool at the service of the economy", it remains nonetheless that the final target of these works is undoubtedly the human element.
In the specific case of the port of Boujdour, no less than 800 coastal and artisanal fishing boats, with a capacity of four to five people each, will operate from two docking quays (3 and 5 metres deep). It is enough to do the calculation to realise the number of households of which it will be the main provider, and the percentage of the local population, which lives almost exclusively from fishing activity, who will benefit from the project directly.
To this is added a modern fish market with a total area of 2,478 square metres and equipped with an electronic display system that will guarantee the transparency of transactions and will allow fishermen to sell their catches in the best conditions.
Other technical installations have also been planned in the perimeter of the port and entrusted to private operators, who have ensured their realisation, namely two fuel supply stations for boats and two ice manufacturing units, in addition to a management and storage depot for standardised plastic containers and a weighing room, called the CAPI room, both realised by the National Fisheries Office.
The new port of Boujdour, whose cost of realisation amounts to 400 million Dh, totally financed by own public funds, also has two protection works, namely a main breakwater of 724 ml and a transverse breakwater of 260 ml, in addition to an inclined plane for the dry-docking and repair of boats.
While waiting for the inauguration of this additional milestone in a process of uninterrupted development for more than three decades, the artisanal fishing operators, whose boats have already found a mooring there and with the return of good weather, cannot say that they do not have the wind in their sails.
