In an era where mental disorders are proliferating… a warning becomes more urgent than ever. Reacting to this, the Moroccan Democratic Organization for Human Rights (IDMDH) in the province of Berrechid is calling out the persistent absence of medical staff at the Errazi Hospital for mental illnesses.
Many mentally ill people have found refuge in the streets of cities, a worrying situation for citizens and local authorities. Recently, the IDMDH pointed to an uncontrolled proliferation of people suffering from mental disorders on public streets, which represents an obvious threat to the safety of citizens.
This concern does not stem from chance; recently, a tragic incident disturbed the peace of Berrechid: the assault of a student by a person suffering from mental disorders. This time, this attack caused a deep wound to the head and a fracture to the victim's arm. Appalled by this situation which continues to deteriorate, the IDMDH holds the Ministry of Health fully responsible for this incident and for the safety of patients and citizens, and firmly denounces the ministry's disregard for this sensitive file despite the numerous parliamentary questions already raised in this regard.
Likewise, the organization also rejects the policy of flooding the city of Berrechid and neighboring communes with people suffering from mental disorders without providing the necessary resources to the Errazi Hospital, which suffers from an acute lack of medication and medical staff, and which has only one doctor in charge of both management and treatment.
Consequently, the IDMDH in the province of Berrechid is demanding urgent compensation for the student injured following the aforementioned assault. Furthermore, the said organization is requesting the opening of a serious investigation by the Ministry of the Interior to determine those responsible for flooding the city and neighboring communes with people suffering from mental disorders.
With the aim of putting an end to these incidents, the same organization demands the issuance of a binding ministerial note to the Director of the Errazi Hospital to ensure the reception of all people in distress, whether they are accompanied by authorities, civil society, or the patients' relatives, and to ensure the necessary care.
It thus demands the urgent provision of medical staff and medication in order to restore the proper functioning of the hospital and guarantee adequate healthcare.
Not only that, the IDMDH urges the Ministry of Justice to take charge of the suffering of citizens and the rights of patients, and to set up suitable accommodation for people suffering from mental disorders, in order to preserve their dignity and safety.
