The Rotary Morocco Foundation recently celebrated, in Agadir, the one hundred and tenth anniversary of its creation, on 23 February 1905 by a certain Paul Harris, who worked as a lawyer in Chicago.
This date is celebrated under the name of World Peace and Understanding Day. And it was only in 1917 that the Rotary Foundation was created. The celebration ceremony of the event constituted an occasion to evaluate one hundred and ten years of action and labour that lead to the well-being of humanity. This global organisation today counts more than 1.2 million members and 34,000 clubs in more than 200 countries, who decide together, exchange ideas and take action.
Looking at the record of the progress of this organisation, it was recalled that on the occasion of the celebration of its 30th anniversary, it undertook an initiative of great magnitude. This is the global polio eradication initiative. This initiative, which required a budget of 1.2 billion dollars, contributed to the eradication of this pathology at a rate estimated at 99%. Morocco was one of the countries that benefited from it.
This occasion thus allowed for the evaluation of the actions of the RC Agadir Doyen. This involves the sponsorship, on 15 November 1950, of the RC of Casablanca and the participation of Rotarians in humanitarian actions provided to the victims of the Agadir earthquake, on 29 February 1960. In June 1984, it organised, in Agadir, the district 173 conference and signed, in 1990, the sponsorship of the RC Agadir Vallée du Souss.
And in 2008, it initialled the sponsorship of the Rotaract Agadir Founty. Two years later, it concluded another sponsorship of the Interact Agadir Tawssna. The Rotary Club Agadir Doyen organised, from 29 March to 1 April 2012, under the High Patronage of H.M. King Mohammed VI, the District 9010 conference. And two years later contracted the sponsorship of the Rotaract Agadir Talalite. It is worth remembering that this organisation deploys important actions in the educational field, in terms notably of preschool education in rural areas, including the support allocated to local associations in Tiwizi, Chtouka Aït Baha and Guelmim.
A total budget estimated at more than one million dirhams has been allocated to this field, the last subsidy having been granted in 2014. Not to mention the significant support provided to youth: it contributes to the development of talents and vocations, develops and implements rich and varied programmes dedicated to youth.
