The Regional Directorate of Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification plans the regeneration of approximately 3,100 hectares of forest formations during the 2015-2017 period.
The regeneration of approximately 3,100 hectares in the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region is part of the strategy of the High Commission for Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification to preserve natural resources. This operation mainly concerns sites of biological and ecological interest identified by the Master Plan for Protected Areas as well as the creation of green belts. According to the monograph of the High Commission for Planning, natural forests occupy an area of 6,000 hectares while reforestation covers 317 hectares, or 0.05% of the national reforestation area.
According to the Regional Directorate, 20 water points will be created, 100 km of forest tracks will be developed and the fight against sand encroachment will be carried out over an area of 315 ha. The operation also includes the installation of 15 km of barriers against sand encroachment, in addition to the reforestation of 4,000 ha of cactus and the distribution of 540 beehives. According to the MAP, a forest nursery has also been developed in Boujdour and Aousserd, 200 hectares of green belts have been installed in Assa, Tata and Bir Gandouz, and 3 million plants have been produced. As for the project to fight against sand encroachment in the city of Tarfaya, an agreement has been signed with a budget of around 43 million dirhams.
