Taznakht carpets: works of art blending originality and creativity

Mohamed Nait Youssef

Whoever says Taznakht, says finely embroidered carpets, blending originality, tradition, art, and beauty. These impressive works, populated with signs, motifs, and symbols, are the result of a centuries-old tradition deeply rooted in the region's history and heritage. Indeed, the Amazigh carpets of Taznakht embody an entire way of life, a worldview, and translate man's relationship with his universe and his environment. Thus, behind each carpet lies a story woven with bright colours, lights, and archetypes, created by the majestic hands of the women weavers of Taznakht.

Taznakht, a centuries-old history…

Whoever says Taznakht, says centuries-old history and tradition. Historically, it played a primary role in the region as a strategic crossroads for caravans transporting spices, pottery, grains, hides, jewellery, sugar, tea, and other goods. Thanks to its geographical location, halfway between Drâa, Telouet, and Souss, this region became a key commercial point connecting the South and North of the country. In truth, these commercial and cultural exchanges have enriched the history and heritage of Taznakht, known particularly for the originality and beauty of its carpets. Proof of this is that it is today one of the largest centres for weaving Berber carpets in Morocco. Located in the southeast of the country, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, Taznakht is distinguished by its natural beauty, particularly the Siroua massif, and by its Kasbah, an architectural gem testifying to its historical and heritage richness through the centuries.

Beyond a simple artisanal object

Taznakht carpets are much more than simple artisanal objects. They are true works of art. Hand-woven from quality wool, these original carpets are characterised by their softness, durability, and unique beauty and aesthetics. Quality is paramount, with natural raw materials such as wool from Siroua sheep and pigments obtained from local plants: saffron, henna, pomegranate peel, madder, Takkaout, alum, among others.

These elements give rise to vibrant colours, ranging from bright yellow to deep red, including shades of blue. Originally, the inhabitants of Taznakht mainly wove traditional clothing, such as djellabas and burnous, before turning to carpets, which have become one of the region's specialities. Passed down from mother to daughter, this ancestral know-how continues to shine, attracting collectors, tourists, and carpet lovers from all over the world.

Being and the universe…

Weaving is more than an artisanal activity: it is a ritual. For the women of Taznakht, it is a privileged moment of sharing, exchange, and reunion, often accompanied by traditional songs that poeticise the atmosphere. This ritual, which accompanies every stage of weaving, embodies the unbreakable link between humans and their environment. It is from nature and history that these women draw their inspiration. Each step is carried out with care and passion: cleaning the wool, combing, spinning… Attached to their universe, the weavers create fascinating tapestries where creativity and human depth blend harmoniously.

Symbols and signs: an inscription on the carpet…

Taznakht carpets are more than just patterns. They are a true visual writing. Bright colours, signs, and symbols intertwine to tell stories inspired by architecture, landscapes, animals (birds, dogs, lions, camels..), as well as other geometric shapes. Each motif has its own meaning, varying according to the tribe and region of origin. Stars, triangles, squares, mirrors, traps, zigzag lines: these shapes symbolise the elements of nature (water, earth, fire, and air), but also concepts such as fertility, the cycle of life, death, strength, freedom, or fertility.

Weaving women, artist women…

They have the art and the manner. The women weavers of Taznakht are true artists, whose creative expression is distinguished by its authenticity and originality. Their works, rich in signs, colours, and symbols, are adorned with complex motifs that appeal to both the eyes and the mind. Through their hands, these talented women transform wool into true masterpieces, thus perpetuating a precious cultural heritage that resists the vagaries of time.
