Nasser Jabour, Director of the National Institute of Geophysics, revealed that a light earthquake was recorded in the commune of Tarmigt in the Ouarzazate province at 1:39 AM GMT this Thursday, with a magnitude of 2.3 on the Richter scale, confirming that it remains a light earthquake.
In a statement to Hespress, Jabour reassured regarding this type of tremor, explaining that it is "weak in terms of power and does not reach the level of a strong or worrying tremor in these areas, as was the case in the Al Haouz earthquake, which had a magnitude reaching the 7-degree ceiling".
The same official also indicated that "earthquakes have been continuing since the last earthquake; however, they are no longer as strong as they were recorded, as they have declined both in terms of power and even in terms of repetition or frequency, especially in the areas affected by the September 8, 2023 earthquake".
Posts and publications spread on social media, late Wednesday-Thursday night, stating that an earthquake was recorded in the Ouarzazate province; these posts were widely shared, accompanied by questions addressed to the public as to whether it was only within the territory of the province itself or if it extended to other areas.
In relation to the same subject, Jabour had previously stated to Hespress, last October, that Morocco had recorded up to 10,000 aftershocks since the "Great Atlas earthquake", most of which were recorded during the period following the incident, specifically during the first and second months.
The Director of the National Institute of Geophysics also pointed out at the time that "despite this large number, which is mainly due to the strength of that earthquake, the aftershocks, both in terms of quantity and intensity, have seen a noticeable decline, as we were recording about 35 aftershocks per day; while recently we have been recording 3 to 4 tremors at most per day".
The population located in the provinces affected by the "Great Atlas earthquake" has been taking aftershocks seriously since this incident, despite their weak intensity, as they fear a repeat of the same scenario that left repercussions that have not been fully overcome despite the passage of more than about 15 months.
Nasser Jabour had also explained that "aftershock seismic activity has decreased significantly compared to the first months, even in the Ighil area, the epicenter of the September 8, 2023 earthquake; today we are talking about a decrease of approximately one-sixth".
The same official also pointed out that "this activity is today at its lowest levels even in terms of intensity; which the National Institute of Geophysics is trying to monitor continuously and around the clock through its departments and staff, as it has been doing since the last Great Atlas earthquake".
Since this incident, which left thousands dead and injured and destroyed buildings in about 6 provinces, a large segment of Moroccans continues to use smart applications on their phones to check the details of any earthquake recorded, whether in terms of place, time, or intensity; a matter that the National Institute of Geophysics also monitors with clarifications from time to time.
