In the hushed shadows of a sumptuous villa in Casablanca, tragedy and scandal have invited themselves to an apparently ordinary party. The case currently shaking the kingdom concerns a French lawyer, known by the initials "F.S.", who accuses several young men from influential families of rape and assault.
The setting, that of a party where opulence meets excess, is now the theatre of a judicial and media battle that could well redefine the contours of justice in the face of economic elites. The plaintiff appeared before the investigating judge of the Criminal Chamber of the Casablanca Court of Appeal this Thursday, 19 December 2024.
This hearing, devoted to her detailed interrogation, took place in the presence of her lawyer, Khadija Roukani, and lasted several hours. A new date has been set for the hearing of the main accused, scheduled for Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 December 2024. At the centre of this case are names with family connotations: Kamil B, son of an influential businessman, and his friend M'hamed L, both of whom are accused by the young lawyer of having drugged her with GHB before raping her. To this are added accusations of physical violence brought by the plaintiff's Moroccan fiancé, who, in the meantime, has mysteriously withdrawn his complaint.
During her hearing before the investigating judge in Casablanca, "F.S.", accompanied by the lawyer and activist Khadija Roukani, categorically rejected all mediation attempts initiated by the families of the accused. The astronomical financial offers and social pressures were not enough to shake the plaintiff, who persists in denouncing acts she describes as "barbaric". According to her statements, she was drugged with a substance known to inhibit consent, before being assaulted.
The sons of the oligarchy facing justice
The case shaking Casablanca transcends the simple judicial framework to become a mirror of social relations and the perception of justice in Morocco. At the centre is a French lawyer determined to make her voice heard against the accused, who symbolise economic power and social influence. The plaintiff's refusal to yield to pressure or financial compensation reinforces the image of a fight that aims to be exemplary. However, the defence of the accused is striving to discredit the victim, a process that is unfortunately classic in this type of case.
For Morocco, this trial could be an opportunity to demonstrate that equality before the law is a reality and not just an ideal. It is a matter of justice for the victim and the trust that citizens, both Moroccan and foreign, place in the country's judicial system. But the road is strewn with pitfalls: between social pressures, privileges, and risks of corruption, it remains to be seen whether this case will mark a break or be added to the long list of hushed-up scandals.
To add to the complexity of the file, medical tests revealed the presence of cocaine in the victim's body. While the lawyers for the accused are trying to use this information to plead a consensual relationship in a festive context, the defence of "F.S." argues that these substances were administered to her without her knowledge. In the background, a heavy climate of distrust towards a justice system often accused of bowing under the weight of relationships and capital.
A trial under high tension
The trial, which promises to be long and thorny, goes far beyond the simple judicial dimension. It raises fundamental questions about class privileges and equality before the law. The villa, hermetically guarded by security agents, did not host a private party, but likely criminal acts of extreme gravity.
The defence of the accused is striving to build a narrative where the victim becomes the aggressor: a foreigner in search of revenge, involved in excesses that she herself provoked. However, the testimonies collected by the French and Moroccan police seem to corroborate, for the moment, the version of "F.S.", notably the marks of physical violence and traces of GHB.
Beyond the facts, this case sheds new light on the abyssal gap between two Moroccos: that of the untouchable elites, and that of ordinary citizens who see in this case yet another demonstration of impunity. Modern Morocco, which aspires to fair justice, finds itself here at a crossroads: will it yield under the pressure of the powerful or will it rise to the level of the standards it displays?
For now, the French lawyer continues her fight, braving the accusatory looks and the diversionary strategies of the defence. Casablanca, this vibrant and cosmopolitan city, observes the unfolding of a trial that will leave no one indifferent, in a mixture of fascination and indignation.
