The grumbling of professors and staff of the National Institute of Fine Arts

A very tense atmosphere reigns at the INBA of Tétouan. And for good reason, the professors and staff of the Institute have been, since Monday 4 June, on an unlimited strike. They are protesting against their poor working conditions and the dismissal of their director, the artist-painter and sculptor Abdelkrim Ouazzani. They qualify this decision as arbitrary and unjust. The protesters consider this dismissal as a kind of humiliation for all the staff of the INBA of Tétouan, especially since Mr. Ouazzani, who has dedicated his whole life "to the service of the Institute," has less than a year left before retiring. According to a statement issued and signed by the professors and staff, they explain that they sent a letter to the supervisory ministry, in which they reported the lack of human and material resources from which the Institute suffers, but without ever having received a response. Given the state of deterioration and degradation of the INBA of Tétouan premises, "we express our deep indignation at the Ministry of Culture's renunciation of the Institute's rehabilitation project," they specify. The protesters are asking for the revision and improvement of the situation of the doctoral professors of the Institute and are claiming their right to internal improvements, while also demanding to thoroughly process the files of the nine retired art education teachers. "We demand to double the Institute's budget, which does not exceed 800,000 DH, part of which is devoted to paying the salaries of retirees," according to the same statement. The professors and staff of the INBA of Tétouan call, in the same statement, on all professional unions, civil society, artists, and intellectuals as well as human rights activists to mobilise with them and support their demands aimed mainly at the rehabilitation of this prestigious and historic Institute. The protesters threaten to continue their strike, which could lead to a blank year, if their demands are not met and if their director is not rehabilitated in his dignity by returning to his post.
