Wastewater pre-treatment plant soon to be operational

Redal, a subsidiary of Veolia Environnement Maroc, organised a press visit to the Rabat-Témara wastewater pre-treatment plant site last Wednesday. The objective was to inquire about the progress of the work on this anti-pollution project.
Wastewater pre-treatment plant soon to be operational

The Rabat-Témara wastewater pre-treatment plant will finally be operational in the second half of this year. This was the message that the managers of Redal, a subsidiary of Veolia, wanted to convey during a visit to the construction site of the said station. The establishment of this station "constitutes the last link in the depollution system of the left bank, on the Rabat side, and of the Oued Bouregreg," declared Daniel Lafon, Executive Director of Redal. As for the other components of this system, they are already completed. These include the construction of a marine outfall, 20 km of interceptor collectors, and 6 pumping stations. The objectives of this depollution system are diverse.

In addition to preserving the environment, this device will eliminate all direct wastewater discharges and improve the quality of bathing water. According to the Director of Investments at Redal, "after wastewater treatment, the bathing water will be category A". Among the other functions is also the revaluation of coastal facades. Technically, this station will treat 520,000 m3 of discharges per day.

A volume that will meet the needs of nearly 1.5 million people. Spanning an area of 1.5 hectares, the site is located in the "green belt" between Yaâcoub El Mansour and Harhoura.

It should be recalled that the choice of the site was one of the main causes behind the enormous delay in the implementation of this anti-pollution project. As for the total cost, it is estimated at 123 million DH. An amount that reflects the importance that this manager attaches to sanitation. According to Daniel Lafon, "during these ten years, Redal has invested 4 billion DH, the majority of which has been dedicated to the theme of sanitation and depollution". On the achievements during the previous year, Redal mobilised 127.10 million DH excluding taxes for sanitation.

This amount was dedicated, among other things, to starting work on the Champ de Tir pre-treatment plant and the pumping and delivery station of the said field, as well as to the elimination of black spots in rainwater drainage and the fight against flooding. Still on this sanitation aspect, this concessionaire completed 525 sanitation connections, including 340 social connections. Today, the length of the networks is estimated at 39.40 km, distributed as follows: 18.10 km in Skhirat-Témara, 15.70 km in Salé, and 5.60 km in Rabat.

2012 Investment Programme

The draft investment budget for the 2012 financial year aligns with the major guidelines of the master plan update studies, set in accordance with the criteria concerning the entire delegated management perimeter, namely the security of drinking water and electricity supply, the completion of the Oued Bouregreg depollution programme, and that of the coastline. Added to this is the continuation of the sanitation programme for non-sanitised areas.
