An organic space for the orphans of Dar Al Atfal Sidi Bernoussi

An organic space for the orphans of Dar Al Atfal Sidi Bernoussi

Dar Al Atfal Sidi Bernoussi welcomes about three hundred residents aged six to eighteen who need activities that enrich their daily lives and can help them discover new perspectives. To allow these orphans to practice a fun and educational manual extracurricular activity while improving their living environment, the orphanage of Sidi Bernoussi has set up, with the help of several volunteers, the "Children's Garden" project. This agro-ecological garden created on the grounds of the Sidi Bernoussi orphanage, with the active participation of the children, is broken down into several different workshops. Agro-ecology is a cultivation technique that is recognised as a factor in the fight for food security. Teaching agro-ecology techniques to children opens up new employment perspectives for them while putting in place a principle of active solidarity between children, young and old, and improving their habitat and their daily lives.

The workshops of the "Children's Garden" project are organised every Saturday afternoon. First of all, after the launch of the project, an expert in the field came to raise awareness among the children and present the principles of agro-ecology. Then, the workshops for planting seeds in pots or direct sowing began, both of various vegetables according to the season and flowers, the regular maintenance of the garden according to agro-ecological principles by the group of young children responsible, and finally the regular harvesting of vegetables and flowers. Thanks to the support of volunteers, the orphanage of Sidi Bernoussi was able to buy small gardening equipment, organic potting soil, the first plants and seeds, and also cover the animator's allowances. The establishment of an educational agro-ecological garden within Dar Al Atfal Sidi Bernoussi aims to improve and enrich the living space of children and young people, to promote healthy and balanced nutrition for the residents of the orphanage, and to develop an ecological sensitivity among them, linked to the protection of the environment and the importance of respecting biodiversity. It therefore improves the living environment of the three hundred beneficiaries, thanks to the plants and flowers that will beautify the landscape, but will also provide healthy and balanced food.

The "Children's Garden" project will have a direct impact, because the harvested vegetables and flowers bring a strong sense of confidence and pride to the children. It will also have a positive contribution in the long term, since the children will gradually integrate the importance of respecting the environment, and will create a bond with the earth. Agro-ecology is recognised by the UN as a serious tool for the fight for food security in the world. Without pesticides, insecticides, or chemical fertilisers, agro-ecology respects reasoned management of water and soil and promotes biodiversity. About Dar Al Atfal Sidi Bernoussi: Dar Al Atfal Sidi Bernoussi is a social centre housing 300 children, full-time residents. These young residents present three social profiles.

They are mostly children deprived of family (abandoned), who come from the Lalla Hasnaa establishment, orphaned children (of one or both parents), or children from destitute families and some are victims of family breakdown. Better known as the Sidi Bernoussi orphanage, the establishment opened its doors on 23 March 1986. It was built by the Sidi Bernoussi Charity Association. Spanning an area of 16,400 m², Dar Al Atfal Bernoussi includes all the spaces necessary to ensure a living space for its residents (dormitories, sanitary facilities, refectories, kitchens...), and allow these residents to evolve in conditions favouring their development, thanks to educational spaces (classrooms, mosque, computer centre, library, toy library...) and activity and leisure spaces (sports fields, gardens...). The establishment's staff consists mostly of employees of the Association, who are above all educators. It also includes administrative, kitchen, maintenance, and cleaning staff...

Some services, such as security, are outsourced. Since its creation, the management of the establishment has been provided by the Charity Association, which brings together about twenty volunteers. These volunteers help with the proper functioning of the social centre, either through financial or material contributions, or by giving their time.
