The prefecture of districts of Sidi Bernoussi has acquired a Waste Sorting and Recycling Centre (CTRD) as part of the implementation of the National Waste Management Programme, which aims to recycle 20% of waste by 2015. The centre, the first of its kind in the metropolis, will serve for the reintegration of people in precarious situations, who work in the collection, sorting, and resale of waste, and who exercise their "trade" in unsanitary and sometimes inhumane conditions. The total budget allocated to this centre, located in the industrial zone of Sidi Bernoussi, is 9.4 million DH, of which 3.82 million are financed by the INDH. "By its economic and environmental vocations, the Waste Sorting and Recycling Centre will allow waste collectors, of all genders, who work in critical sanitary conditions that undermine their dignity, to enjoy a decent living environment and to participate in the local development process, in accordance with the philosophy of the INDH. An operation that deserves to be generalised throughout Morocco," explains Mohamed Moujib, head of the Social Action Division within the prefecture. Sorting will start at the source: The operating mode of the CTRD will impact the lives of people directly or indirectly linked to waste recycling. Thus, about sixty people will be able to work in more humane conditions and in a totally legal framework. Furthermore, specially created "eco-kiosks" will be at the centre of selective sorting operations, in seven neighbourhoods of the prefecture, which were chosen to start the process, not only to facilitate it, but also to raise awareness among 1,400 households concerned by waste sorting at the source. These eco-kiosks will be supervised by a sorting agent and will be equipped with waste containers, differentiated by colours, and specific to each material (metal, plastic, paper...). The families who participate will also benefit from several advantages, to encourage them to participate in the programme, through the granting of purchase vouchers, discounts on household or food products... So many advantages to improve the quality of life of the Casablancais. Declaration: Mohamed Ali Habouha, governor of the prefecture of districts of Sidi Bernoussi "Reduce the volume of waste and the allocated cost": The implementation and duplication of this innovative experience are part of the sustainable development process of Greater Casablanca and will allow several objectives to be achieved both on the environmental, economic, and social levels. Thus, the centre will allow the reduction of the volume of household and similar waste, as well as the cost allocated to cleaning and collection services for this waste.
