Launch of the OCP integrated industrial site: Safi, new global phosphate hub

HM King Mohammed VI has just launched the work for the realisation of the large-scale integrated industrial site of the OCP Group, Safi Phosphate Hub (SPH). This megaproject is a new giant step that the OCP is taking on the path to concretising its strategy in this field. "The large-scale integrated industrial site of the OCP Group, Safi Phosphate Hub (SPH), whose construction work was launched Friday by HM King Mohammed VI, represents an important opportunity and a true strategic project," emphasised the group's CEO, Mustapha Terrab. "It is about developing, by taking advantage of the new port of Safi which will be built, a new industrial platform equivalent to that of Jorf Lasfar," specified Mr. Terrab in a statement to the press on this occasion. Concretely, this project will mobilise an investment of more than 30 billion DH carried by this locomotive group of the national economy. The objective of this development programme is to establish this new site as a space for cutting-edge industrial innovation and an engine for the development of the national economy.

Located opposite the new port of Safi, whose construction work was also launched Friday by the Sovereign, this future industrial site will boost the development of the central phosphate axis in Morocco (Gantour-Safi), like the Jorf Phosphate Hub (JPH) for the northern phosphate axis (Khouribga-Jorf Lasfar). "Safi Phosphate Hub will be a true second phosphate axis which will be developed over an area of 1,300 ha and which will be supplied in terms of production not only by the mining basins of Gantour (Khouribga) but also by the Meskala basin (Essaouira), since Safi is located halfway between the two basins," noted the OCP CEO.

This new hub, which covers an area of 1,300 ha, will therefore have as its primary vocation to valorise the special qualities of the phosphates of the Gantour deposit (Benguerir and Youssoufia mines), in a first phase, and that of Meskala in the Essaouira region, in a second phase. Several modern infrastructures are programmed within the framework of this project, which will adopt cutting-edge technologies in the field of the phosphate industry. It will allow for the creation of 1,000 permanent jobs and 6,000 during the construction phase.

Supplied from Gantour phosphates known for their special quality, this new site will be specialised in the manufacture of innovative products (liquid fertiliser and trace elements) and specific products (food-grade phosphate, special acids, and Teractiv). This complex will also have the capacity to produce standard fertilisers (DAP, TSP, and NPK) to meet market needs. The new site will house an industrial zone intended for the group's partners, as well as a training centre for employees. It will also host a research and development centre dedicated to new technologies in several fields, including phosphate, energy, and water.
