Mohammedia is not completely safe from the floods of Oued Maleh, like those that devastated the city in 2002. The flood protection system, put in place since then, had proven its effectiveness and allowed the city to withstand, without too much damage, a flow of 140 m3/s. An equivalent flow was also recorded on 14 November 2002, which increased in the following days. This observation is the conclusion of a study on the protection of the city of Mohammedia against floods, presented last Wednesday during a meeting held in the presence of Charafat Afilal, Minister Delegate in charge of Water, and the governor of the prefecture, Ali Salem Cheggaf, as well as officials from the National Office of Electricity and Potable Water and the Bouregreg and Chaouia Hydraulic Basin Agency. The report, produced by a Moroccan consulting firm, sounds the alarm on the issue. According to this study, the structures put in place in the aftermath of the 2002 floods, notably the relief canal, the dam, and the dikes, do not ensure one hundred percent protection of the city against floods. The authors of the study assure that even if the risks have diminished, it is still necessary to proceed as quickly as possible with the consolidation of the existing system. The report also highlights the need to enhance and make use of the wetland near the Mohammedia golf course, as well as the "Dayas" (temporary ponds) in the commune of Beni Yakhlef, given their important role in mitigating the force of floods, like a natural dam. To definitively protect the city from flood risks, especially in the Mohammedia-West zone near industrial units and the refinery, a technical meeting will be held soon at the Mohammedia prefecture. The objective is to define defensive measures and, above all, to mobilise the partners and resources necessary for the implementation of this rescue plan. A plan in which, in addition to the Minister Delegate in charge of Water and the prefecture, the urban commune of Mohammedia, the National Office of Railways (ONCF), and industrialists will be involved.
