Law enforcement forces moved into the "Carrières centrales" shanty town located in the Hay Mohammadi district yesterday morning, or what remains of it. The operation consisted of the demolition of about forty shacks still standing. According to a witness on the spot, the owners of the shacks in question had already benefited from a relocation operation. "They were transferred to housing built by the Al Omrane company in the commune of Tit Mellil, near the Al Ghofrane cemetery," he indicates. The same source reports that the beneficiaries subsequently bequeathed their makeshift shacks, each for their part, to relatives or parents. The operation carried out that day was, it seems, intended to put an end to a lawless situation.
As with every similar operation, the occupants put up fierce resistance to the bulldozers, in a final hope that their shacks would be spared. Other witnesses also indicate that some occupants even threatened to set fire to their makeshift housing.
