Academics in Fès examine the role of agriculture as a main lever for the development of the local economy and society
A panel of historians and university researchers highlighted, on Wednesday in Fès, the crucial role of agriculture as a main lever for the development of the local economy and society.
During the opening of a seminar initiated on 9 and 10 December by the Faculty of Arts of Fès-Dhar El Mehraz under the theme "Agriculture in the history of Morocco", participants stressed that the agricultural sector in Morocco has experienced remarkable development through the replacement of subsistence farming with modern agriculture, which has largely contributed to the growth of the Moroccan economy.
The development of agricultural production techniques, the adoption of modern devices, and the implementation by the relevant ministry and sector professionals of plans and programmes to promote agriculture have contributed to achieving an agricultural surplus in a number of sectors, they continued, specifying that this surplus had a positive impact on the development of the Moroccan economy and on improving the standard of living of the population.
The academics also reviewed the various stages of the evolution of Moroccan agriculture, which has now become modern and competitive and contributes significantly to the country's economic take-off.
They also recalled that the use of new developed techniques and the creation of agronomic research centres and institutes have played a primary role in the development of a number of agricultural sectors and the improvement of farmers' incomes and the nutritional quality of food products.
Initiated in partnership with the "Bibliographic Analysis and Maghreb Documentation" laboratory, under the same faculty, and the Moroccan Association for Research in History, the meeting paid a vibrant tribute to university researcher Ahmed Meziane.
