A galaxy of researchers, critics, and theatre professionals debated on Sunday in Fez the mechanisms and components of the question of identity in Moroccan theatre. During a thematic conference within the framework of the 9th edition of the Fez International Festival of Professional Theatre, the participants reviewed the various forms of theatrical creativity accumulated by Moroccan professionals in terms of writing, directing, and scenography.
Speaking on this occasion, the researcher Hassan El Mnii estimated that "no one can speak of a static identity of theatre", stressing that "theatre lives daily an interaction with cultures and always submits to profound changes". Highlighting some foreign experiences in the theatrical field, Mr. El Mnii noted that theatre no longer has an identity but one can speak of specificities, especially since Morocco has adopted this art and used it as a weapon against the occupier through the organization of demonstrations.
Identity in Moroccan theatre is variable thanks to the changes that the world has known, he specified, adding that Moroccan theatre is human and benefits from all the theatrical genres of the world.
For her part, the writer Badia Erradi dealt with the various forms of identity in Moroccan theatre through cultural questions, stressing that in the light of the accelerated mutations that the world is experiencing, "identity can only be multiple". She also made it known that Moroccans are working on the building of a multicultural Morocco, as a source of its enrichment and authenticity. The playwright Houcine Chaâbi, for his part, focused on the approach to identity in Moroccan theatre and on the mechanisms adopted by the first professionals of the theatre stage.
Initiated by the Moroccan Union of Theatre Professionals-Fez section, under the theme "Theatre, a bridge for the rooting of the values of peace and tolerance", the Fez International Festival of Professional Theatre aims to revive theatrical activity at the city level and celebrate the various forms of performing arts.
This festival, organized in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and other partners, also tends to value the cultural and artistic achievements of previous editions and to promote theatrical creativity.
