Hay Mohammadi in the spotlight

- Charged with history, this mythical neighbourhood arouses the covetousness of researchers, professors, writers and associative actors.
Hay Mohammadi in the spotlight

Fueling the themes of meetings and always being the subject of particular interest, the mythical Hay Mohammadi neighbourhood has something to arouse this covetousness. First, because what was known, yesterday, under the name "Carrières centrales" (central quarry) is a place charged with history. Then, the architectural and cultural heritage it contains makes Hay Mohammadi a high place of memory. A meeting was organised, at the initiative of the "Casamémoire" association, in order to present the results of the project "Traces of spaces, history, memory and heritage of Hay Mohammadi". Which project is part of the implementation of the recommendations of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER) in terms of community reparation. The objective is to rehabilitate and preserve the memory of this part of Casablanca and improve its image through a better knowledge of its past and its experience, as well as its transmission to future generations. "The Hay Mohammedi neighbourhood contains numerous historical, architectural and cultural spaces to be safeguarded in order to preserve the common memory.

These spaces represent a slice of the living memory that must be preserved within the framework of the community reparation programme" stressed, to the MAP, the organisers. The Carrières centrales, the former "Chabbou" or Lafarge factory, the slaughterhouses, the former Derb Moulay Chérif detention centre, Dar El Alia, the former Essaâdiyine school, the Chérif and Saada cinemas, the Chama Fountain and the Jonquière barracks are among the spaces identified by the instigators of the event.

The meeting could not take place without the presentation of the work by Najib Taki "Aspects of the memory of the Carrières centrales Hay Mohammadi in Casablanca in the 20th century, documentation essay". A book that distils a titanic effort of gathering archive documents on the Carrières centrales Hay Mohammadi from the protectorate period to the years of lead. Indeed, the realisation of the work by Professor Najib Taki is integrated into the project "Traces of spaces, history, memory and heritage of Hay Mohammadi" led by "Casamémoire" within the framework of the community reparation programme. Launched in 2007, this programme is intended for regions and communities considered to have suffered collectively, directly or indirectly, from human rights violations perpetrated in the past.

Dedication to memory

The work "Aspects of the memory of the Carrières centrales: Hay Mohammadi in Casablanca in the 20th century, documentation essay" is a historical monograph of the neighbourhood. It covers several aspects of the memory of the neighbourhood (historical, social, political, cultural, etc.) through three major parts: the space of the Carrières centrales during the protectorate period, the aspect of the history of the National Movement at the Carrières centrales during the protectorate and the aspect of the history of the Derb Moulay Cherif prison after independence. This work is one of the publications of the project "Traces of spaces, history, memory and heritage of Hay Mohammadi", realised by "Casamémoire" in partnership with the associations Initiative urbaine and Forum Saada, with the support of the National Human Rights Council, the CDG Foundation and the European Union.
