Public Prosecutor closes proceedings due to the death of the two drivers

The King's Prosecutor at the Court of First Instance of Tan-Tan has decided to close the proceedings initiated following the tragic accident that occurred on 10 April on National Road No. 1 connecting Tangier to Lagouira between a passenger coach and a goods truck, due to the death of the two drivers involved, we learn from a judicial source.

"In application of Article 40 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the surviving victims and the beneficiaries of the deceased will be notified of this decision so that they can file their civil claims before the competent judicial body," indicates a statement from the Public Prosecutor.

The Public Prosecutor's Office, the statement recalls, opened an in-depth judicial investigation into the circumstances of this accident which resulted in 35 deaths and 9 injuries, during which the survivors, the coach's second driver, the truck owner, the legal representative of the passenger transport company, as well as the victims' beneficiaries and some road users who witnessed the accident, were heard.

Two expert reports were carried out on this subject, the same source adds, explaining that the results of the investigation reveal that the coach driver lost control of the vehicle and skidded towards the truck which was travelling in the opposite direction, hitting it head-on on the left side of the trailer, which caused a fire."

The fire, the heat of which exceeded 700 degrees, was fanned by the fuel from the tanks of both vehicles as well as by the tyres and the presence of plastic products and a gas cylinder, fragments of which were found at the scene, the same source specifies, indicating that the flames reached the inside of the coach where passengers were, mostly children trapped inside without being able to save themselves," the same source concludes.
