Casablanca – The census of the sheep and goat herd continues in the Casablanca-Settat region, in good conditions, thanks to the broad involvement of livestock farmers, the services of the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, and its other partners.
This operation, which runs until the end of December, is part of the 2024 General Census of the National Livestock Herd, launched by the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, and the National Association of Sheep and Goat Breeders, under the slogan "Our livestock, our country's wealth", with the aim of providing updated data on the national sheep and goat herd, its composition, and its geographical distribution.
In this regard, the Head of the Statistics Division at the Regional Directorate of Agriculture for the Casablanca-Settat region, Abdelbasset Redouane, highlighted in a statement to the Maghreb Arabe Presse agency that the Directorate has mobilised 86 researchers in addition to 8 regional and provincial supervisors to monitor and support the census operation within 150 rural communes belonging to the eight provinces located in the region.
He explained that the census operation aims to collect data on the number of livestock by breed, type, sex, and age groups, and to update figures and data, with the aim of working to renew the herd, restructure it, and control the red meat chain with a view to achieving self-sufficiency.
Mr. Redouane added that the census operation in the Casablanca-Settat region is going well, marked by the involvement and mobilisation of all stakeholders, noting that 110 communes out of 150 concerned rural communes have been covered so far.
For his part, field researcher Abdessadek Fathi confirmed, in a similar statement, that the operation is going well and that farmers, especially livestock breeders, have received it positively, noting that field researchers have all the necessary logistical and technical resources.
It should be noted that the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests is carrying out the herd census in the presence of the local authority and in coordination with other partners, namely the National Association of Sheep and Goat Breeders, the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture, the Regional Office for Agricultural Investment of Doukkala, the Chamber of Agriculture of the Casablanca-Settat region, the National Office for Agricultural Advisory, and the National Office for Food Safety.
