Cereal production: More than 15 million quintals expected in Chaouia-Ouardigha

Cereal production in the Chaouia-Ouardigha region for the 2012-2013 season is expected to reach 15.59 million quintals, indicates the Regional Directorate of Agriculture (DRA) of the Chaouia-Ouardigha region in a statement.

The province of Settat takes the lion's share with a total cereal production of around 7.07 million quintals (1.8 million quintals for durum wheat, more than 2.8 million quintals for soft wheat, and more than 2.3 million quintals for barley), followed by Berrechid with more than 3.1 million quintals (785,000 quintals of durum wheat, more than 1.7 million quintals of soft wheat, and 626,000 quintals for barley), while cereal production in the provinces of Khouribga and Benslimane stood at more than 3 million quintals and more than 2.4 million quintals respectively.

These promising results, which testify that the Chaouia-Ouardigha region still maintains its strategic function as a traditional granary of cereal production at the national level, were achieved thanks to favorable climatic conditions, since the average rainfall recorded throughout the region, since the beginning of the agricultural campaign, was around 448.2 mm, i.e., a surplus of 73% compared to the previous campaign (259.5 mm).
