Speaking within the framework of the 1st National University Forum organised in celebration of International Human Rights Day under the theme "Human rights, a lever for the social state", the academics and researchers participating in this two-day meeting reviewed the evolution of human rights over the last decades, as well as the role of the university, civil society, and NGOs in the protection of human rights.
Intervening at the opening ceremony of this forum, Driss Lagrini, president of the Laboratory for Constitutional Studies and Crisis and Policy Analysis (LECACP) of the Faculty of Legal, Economic and Social Sciences of Marrakech, stressed that this meeting constitutes an important occasion to recall the efforts made by Morocco in terms of human rights protection.
In this sense, Mr. Lagrini noted that the Kingdom has achieved, over the last 25 years, significant progress in this area thanks to constitutional, legislative, and institutional reforms, as well as the adoption of public policies aimed at strengthening human rights in practice, specifying that this important dynamic has contributed to the strengthening of the human rights system in an international context marked by growing interest in issues of democracy and human rights.
Recalling Morocco's unwavering commitment to the protection of human rights as universally recognised, he recalled, in this regard, the constitutionalisation of rights and freedoms and a set of institutions concerned with the protection of human rights, in addition to the ratification of several agreements and treaties in this area.
In the same vein, the dean of the Polydisciplinary Faculty of Safi, Abdessamad Charif, indicated that Morocco can only be proud of its achievements in terms of enshrining human rights under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, highlighting the efforts made to achieve a balance reconciling the requirements of economic and social development and the guarantee of individual and collective rights and freedoms.
Since the accession of HM King Mohammed VI to the Throne of His Glorious ancestors, Morocco has recorded important advances in various fields, more particularly in terms of rights and freedoms, he affirmed, recalling, in this context, the constitutional reform of 2011.
The representative of the Institution of the Ombudsman of the Kingdom, Issam Azzouzi, for his part, highlighted the importance of this body as a constitutional mechanism, noting that the creation of this instance testifies to the evolution that the Kingdom is experiencing in terms of human rights.
"The Institution of the Ombudsman of the Kingdom is determined on an ongoing basis to support all research projects and university studies dealing with institutional mediation and the various issues related to human rights in all their dimensions", he insisted.
This first day of the forum was marked by the presentation of an intervention by Ali Karimi, member of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), focused on the evolution of human rights in Morocco.
This meeting is organised by the Polydisciplinary Faculty of Safi and the LECACP, in partnership with the Interministerial Delegation for Human Rights, the Regional Human Rights Commission (CRDH) of Marrakech-Safi, the Institution of the Ombudsman of the Kingdom, and the Safi Bar Association.
