The opening of the photographic exhibition "Portraits of Peru and Morocco" by Peruvian artist Nicola Moreno took place on Thursday at the Cervantes Institute in Rabat, as part of the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Peru and Morocco.
Through his portraits, the Peruvian artist offers a unique look at daily life on the streets of Rabat, Tangier, and Rincon, while weaving a visual dialogue between Peru and Morocco.
The exhibition offers a visual journey between two cultures, showing the beauty of the ordinary and the human richness of both countries through portraits of street scenes. For a year, the photographer traveled the streets of Rabat, Tangier, and Rincon, photographing scenes with a 55mm lens.
The artist also presents portraits taken over more than a decade in Peru, in cities such as Lima, Arequipa, and Moquegua, testifying to the vibrant life full of history in these places.
On this occasion, Pedro Diaz Vargas, Chargé d'Affaires at the Embassy of Peru in Morocco, emphasized that throughout this year, a series of cultural activities have been organized to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Peru and Morocco, noting that the goal is to bring the two peoples closer together through artistic sensitivity.
The Embassy of Peru in Morocco supported this project from the beginning, given that everything starts with the gaze, he added, believing that contemplating countries and peoples through scenes of daily life is the best way to better "know each other and strengthen the friendship that unites us."
In a statement to MAP, Mr. Diaz Vargas noted that on the cultural level, "we have done excellent work. We have worked a lot in this field," noting that Morocco also carries out many activities in Peru.
As for photographer Nicola Moreno, he indicated that "this project is much more than a simple collection of images; it is a bridge that connects two worlds, geographically distant but united by the universal language of the everyday," adding that the goal is above all to express daily life, the beauty and poetry of the ordinary, and the simple gestures specific to each city, and to show how they manifest in the heart of the inhabitants' lives, through their expressions.
The exhibition "Portraits of Peru and Morocco," which will be open to the general public from December 13, 2024, to January 24, 2025, at the Cervantes Institute in Rabat, represents a unique opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural heritage that unites Peru and Morocco.
Through Nicola Moreno's lens, visitors will be able to explore the nuances of daily life and strengthen the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding between the two nations.
