Rabat: Theatrical performance by inmates of correctional facilities

Inmates from correctional facilities presented a theatrical performance this week titled "Kif Lhal" (How are you?) at the Mohammed V Theatre in Rabat, on the occasion of the National Day of the Prisoner, celebrated on December 9 each year.

This event, organised by the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR), in partnership with the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Reintegration of Prisoners, offers inmates an opportunity to showcase their talents and share their creations with a wide audience.

The play, written and directed by DGAPR staff and theatre specialists, featured the participation of 43 inmates selected from 14 correctional facilities.

The Director of Social and Cultural Action within the DGAPR, Idriss Aguelmam, stated to the press on this occasion that "the National Day of the Prisoner is an annual milestone that reflects the delegation's strategic orientation, aiming to open up to social actors through creations produced by inmates".

According to the official, these initiatives allow inmates to interact positively with society by "changing the negative perception that society may have of this category, while offering the delegation an opportunity to reveal the talents and skills present within correctional facilities".

For his part, the coordinator of the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Reintegration of Prisoners noted that the celebration of this Day is part of the efforts aimed at shifting from a logic of sanction to one of education and qualification in correctional facilities, with a view to facilitating the post-prison reintegration of prisoners.

This day was also an opportunity for inmates to demonstrate some of the skills acquired within correctional facilities and their willingness to contribute to the development of society, he said.

On the sidelines of this day, two art exhibitions were also organised, showcasing works created by inmates in the fields of fine arts and crafts.
