The deaths at the Moulay Youssef Hospital Center in Rabat were not due to a technical failure

Ministry of Health Communiqué

The deaths recorded at the Moulay Youssef Hospital Center in Rabat were not due to a technical failure, according to the results of an investigation conducted by the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, revealed on Saturday.

Following what was reported regarding the death of four patients at the Moulay Youssef Hospital Center in Rabat, coinciding with a technical failure that occurred in the oxygen supply channels, a commission from the General Inspectorate of the Ministry was urgently dispatched to this health establishment to investigate the circumstances of these deaths, the Ministry indicates in a clarification.

Contrary to what has been circulated on this subject, two deaths were recorded on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, the first two and a half hours after the failure, while the second death occurred more than four hours later. The report confirmed that their deaths were not linked to the technical failure, but rather to complications of their illness for which they had been admitted to the intensive care unit for more than 14 and 4 days, respectively.

The report of the commission, composed of officials from the central administration, doctors specializing in resuscitation and anesthesia, and technicians specializing in equipment maintenance, specifies that the intensive care unit of the Moulay Youssef Hospital Center in Rabat experienced a sudden technical failure related to the oxygen supply channels on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 10:40 AM.

It is therefore not a lack of oxygen or a power cut at the hospital, contrary to what has been reported on this subject, the same source adds, noting that after about forty minutes, the oxygen supply channels began to function normally again.

Despite this sudden failure, all patients in the concerned department continued to be supplied with oxygen thanks to the use of mobile oxygen cylinders, which ensured the continuity of treatment for all patients.

The Ministry of Health and Social Protection expresses its condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterates its commitment to providing quality health services to citizens and to informing the public of any developments in this matter, the same source concludes.
