This new structure was inaugurated this Tuesday in the presence of the CHU director, Prof. Raouf Mohsine, the general director of the Children's Hospital, Prof. Tarik Madhi, and the Danish Ambassador to Morocco, Berit Basse. It is the result of a partnership between the Rabat CHU, the Novo Nordisk laboratory, the Moroccan Society of Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology (SMEDIAP), as well as the Ministry of Health and Social Protection. It aims to improve the quality of life for children and adolescents living with type 1 diabetes in Morocco.
This centre thus meets a significant need in terms of care for children and young people with type 1 diabetes, up to the age of 25. According to data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Morocco has 43,300 cases of diabetes among children and adolescents under 19, placing it among the ten countries in the world with the highest number of young people affected by this disease.
Furthermore, the Therapeutic Education Centre aims to facilitate the implementation of a unified data system on type 1 diabetes. This will allow for better coordination between advocacy actions and the care provided by health professionals and other stakeholders.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony of this project, Raouf Mohsine, General Director of the Rabat CHU, emphasised that therapeutic education is fully integrated into care and represents a key factor for the success of treatment.
"As the country's first university hospital centre, I am honoured to see the opening of this centre specialised in therapeutic education for children and their families. I hope that this centre will become a reference for regional health structures," he declared.
Olla Al Refai, General Manager of Novo Nordisk in Morocco, stated for her part: "We are delighted to renew our commitment to fighting diabetes through the Changing Diabetes in Children project. This project is fully in line with Novo Nordisk's social responsibility, and I salute the commitment of our partners who are working in this same direction to improve the quality of life for young people with type 1 diabetes."
For her part, the president of SMEDIAP, Prof. Farida Jennane, stated: "As health professionals working in the field of pediatric diabetes, we are seeing a gradual increase in the number of cases. These children and their families require specialised care. By establishing education centres and developing tools adapted to local realities, we hope that this partnership will contribute to improving access to care for these young people, which is in perfect alignment with the mission of our learned society."
