The Atlas lion will regain its reign: Birth of three lion cubs at the National Zoological Garden

An Atlas lioness gives birth to three cubs. The three cubs and their mother are doing well and are under veterinary supervision for their health monitoring and vaccination.

With these new births, the NZG now has 27 Atlas lions.

It houses the largest captive population in the world of this species, which is emblematic of the Middle Atlas ecosystem, and supplies other zoos around the world as part of wild species exchange operations.

In this capacity, it ensures the monitoring of breeding programmes aimed at the conservation and improvement of the species. Programmes are based on the evaluation of the genetic heritage of the captive Atlas lion population through DNA analysis, the promotion of scientific research, and the establishment of an information exchange network and awareness and education programmes focused on the conservation of this species.

It should be noted that this zoological garden constitutes a platform for the conservation of desert wildlife heritage and a centre for study and research for the production of scientific knowledge on species, particularly endangered species, their behaviour, their way of life, and their biology, for better action for the restoration of Moroccan natural ecosystems.
