It has been the chief town of the Ouezzane province (Tangier-Tetouan region) since its creation in 2009, having previously been part of the Sidi Kacem province (Gharb-Chrarda-Beni Hssen region).
The town of Ouezzane is situated on the southern margins of the Jebala country. It is built in an amphitheatre on the northern flank of Jbel Bouhlal and the south-eastern flank of Jbel Bouakika. It is crossed by a single road axis from east to west, which divides into two branches at each end.
The town of Ouezzane is located at an altitude of 614 metres and is protected from Atlantic influences by the surrounding medium-altitude mountains. It enjoys a sub-humid Mediterranean climate characterised by a dry summer with temperatures varying between 19 °C and 32 °C, and a cold to mild winter with temperatures varying between 6 °C and 14 °C. The annual average rainfall is 800 mm, distributed irregularly.
