The breakdown led, last Thursday, to the ship running aground on rocks in the maritime zone located between Nador and Melilla, under the effect of strong winds and sea currents.

According to a statement from the Royal Armed Forces, a specialized naval unit was quickly deployed to provide the necessary assistance, while respecting maritime safety standards adapted to the rocky nature of the site and unfavorable weather conditions.

The towing operation is progressing at a steady pace to ensure the safety of the ship and its return to the port of Nador, the FAR specified.

A technical committee has been set up to investigate the causes of this incident and propose preventive measures aimed at avoiding such accidents in the future.

For their part, the authorities of Melilla expressed their optimism regarding a rapid resolution of the situation, while emphasizing the continuous coordination with the Moroccan authorities. Fadila Mokhtar, spokesperson for the Melilla government, reassured that the Moroccan ship was not at risk of sinking, given that the water depth in the area concerned is about two meters.

The Spanish press reported the dispatch of a rescue team, equipped with divers and specialized equipment, from the port of Motril. However, this team did not intervene, due to a lack of request from the Moroccan authorities.
