The archaeological importance of the Sijilmasa site, subject of a meeting in Midelt

The archaeological importance of the Sijilmasa site, subject of a meeting in Midelt
Midelt - The Sijilmasa site and its historical importance were the focus of a seminar held last Tuesday, on the occasion of the Cultural Days of Midelt (January 28 - February 1).

According to the "Chababouna" association, which organised this meeting, the seminar aimed to introduce the younger generations in particular to the history of Sijilmasa, which was a cultural and commercial hub and one of the cities that left its mark on the history of Morocco and the Islamic world in the Middle Ages.

Researchers, historians, and academics reviewed the socio-economic and political roles of this city, which served as a crossroads of civilisations and trade, while proposing solutions to enhance archaeological research at the site.

Omar Zafati, a lecturer at the National Institute of Archaeology and Heritage, highlighted in his speech that archaeological excavations in Sijilmasa began in several periods, starting with the first explorations at the beginning of the 20th century.

He also reviewed the most notable discoveries made at the site, such as architectural landmarks, everyday tools, inscriptions, and artefacts that provide a deeper understanding of the social and economic life of that period.

He pointed out the challenges faced by researchers, such as the complexity of the archaeological strata and environmental challenges in the region, stressing the importance of studying the excavations to understand the city's history and its influence on the history of Morocco and the Arab world.

For his part, Professor Abderrahmane Hamdani, Director of the Alaouite Studies and Research Centre, emphasised the importance of using modern techniques for archaeological dating, such as radiocarbon analysis and precise documentation of findings, to ensure the accuracy of the information gathered about the city.

He also called for strengthening cooperation between researchers and relevant institutions to develop studies related to Sijilmasa, which would contribute to placing this city in its historical context.

Youssef El Alaoui, representative of the "Chababouna" association, indicated in a statement to the Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP) that this fourth edition of the Midelt Cultural Days, organised in coordination with the Regional Directorate of Culture of Drâa-Tafilalet, aimed to shed light on the history of Sijilmasa and its social and economic roles through the organisation of conferences, seminars, video screenings, and visual arts exhibitions to bring the history of this city closer to the general public.

It is worth noting that Sijilmasa, since its founding in the 8th century, was a prosperous metropolis and a hub for caravan trade connecting many civilisations, especially African and Eastern ones, before its decline starting at the end of the 14th century.
