The Chamber of Crafts of the Fes-Meknes region approved, during its last ordinary session, the agreement relating to the creation of a permanent regional craft exhibition in Fes.
This major project, with a budget of 50 million dirhams (MDH), aims to boost the craft sector and enhance the region's tourist appeal.
According to the terms of the agreement, the exhibition will be set up on the site of the former headquarters of the National Seed Marketing Company (SONACOS) in Fes, thus rehabilitating this building. The project includes the creation of exhibition stands, demonstration workshops, and sales areas, as well as administrative and logistical premises, reports MAP.
The financing of the project, included in the Regional Development Programme (PDR) 2022-2027, will be provided by the Fes-Meknes Regional Council (42.5 MDH), the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts and Social and Solidarity Economy (4.5 MDH), and the Fes-Meknes Chamber of Crafts (3 MDH). Al Omrane Fes-Meknes will be responsible for carrying out the work as the delegated contracting authority.
Speaking at the ordinary session, the President of the Chamber of Crafts, Naji Fakhari, stressed the importance of this project for the promotion of local crafts. According to him, this initiative will offer artisans better visibility to exhibit and market their products, in addition to strengthening the tourist appeal of the city of Fes and its region.
For his part, the regional director of crafts in Fes, Abderrahim Belkhayat, highlighted the strategic location of the future exhibition, in close proximity to the Centre for Trades and Skills (CMC) and the future Congress Palace.
"This synergy will create a real hub of attraction, thereby strengthening Fes's position as a leading tourist and cultural destination," he stated.
He also stressed the urgency of carrying out this project in the context of preparations for the 2030 World Cup, affirming that "the exhibition will contribute to enhancing Moroccan artisanal heritage, a major asset for the country's international influence".
The adopted agreement includes a precise timetable for the disbursement of financial contributions (by 2027), as well as a monitoring and control mechanism for the use of funds.
The management of the exhibition will be entrusted to the Fes-Meknes Chamber of Crafts, which will be responsible for its operation, animation, and maintenance. A steering committee and a technical committee, composed of representatives from the various partners, will be established to oversee the project's implementation and management.
