International Animation Film Festival: Canada is the guest of honour in Meknes

Canadian animation will be in the spotlight during the 13th edition of the Meknès International Animation Film Festival (FICAM), scheduled from 21 to 26 March. For the great pleasure of lovers of this genre, the organisers of this event, namely the Aïcha Foundation and the French Institute of Meknès, have concocted an unprecedented programme, dedicated to Canadian animation. It includes tributes, competitions, screenings, workshops as well as Master Classes. Starting with a tribute paid to one of the leading figures of Canadian animation cinema, Norman McLaren. This celebration is part of the centenary of his birth. On this occasion, a short film by this master will be screened before each session and a series of initiation and awareness workshops on the techniques of this pioneer of animation will be scheduled. The festival provides for the presence of the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), "recognised as one of the great creative laboratories of the world". "It will be present to share all the creativity and innovation offered by one of the most important producers of auteur animation films". For this, Julie Roy, executive producer at the NFB, will be invited to the festival to unveil a programme dedicated to the place of women in animation cinema. Also to be mentioned is that experimental Canadian animation cinema will be proposed by the Cinémathèque québécoise and by Steven Woloshen, an eminent professional. Furthermore, the 13th edition of the FICAM will be distinguished by the launch of the first edition of the international competition for feature-length animation films, Longs Compét', for which a junior jury will be responsible for awarding the prizes. On the other hand, the festival presents the Aïcha Grand Prix for animation, today in its 8th edition. According to the organisers, "this prize offers the festival the possibility of favouring the emergence and development of young Moroccan directors who are increasingly innovative and high-performing". Also on the programme, a Master Class will be provided by Eric Goldberg, a renowned director at the mythical Disney studio. The 13th FICAM will be closed by a journey in images and music through the history of this art. This being said, animation cinema lovers all over Morocco will have the opportunity to discover this festival thanks to FICAM Morocco. Moreover, a week of travelling animation cinema will be organised in Casablanca and throughout the network of French Institutes of Morocco which will host screenings and interventions by prestigious guests of the festival.
