At the Dar El Bacha Museum of Confluences in Marrakech: Enki Bilal unveils his visionary universe
Contemporary Art For the first time in Morocco, the unique universe of Enki Bilal is invited to the Dar El Bacha Museum of Confluences in Marrakech. Since 15 October 2026, around twenty major drawings by this Franco-Serbian artist have been presented as part of "Enki Bilal: The Exhibition", organised by the National Museums Foundation and Artcurial. An immersion into a body of work where anticipation, memory, fantasy, and questions about the contemporary world intersect. The ochre city hosts an unprecedented artistic event with one of the most unique creators of comics and contemporary art. After being presented in several major international metropolises, notably Paris, Berlin, Milan, New York, Singapore, and Tokyo, the work of Enki Bilal makes a stop in Marrakech. Through around twenty drawings, the public is invited to discover an immediately recognisable graphic universe, marked by mysterious atmospheres, unsettling landscapes, and characters with ambiguous identities. Far from being limited to illustration, Bilal's work questions the upheavals of our time. His compositions reveal worlds in mutation, in which the boundaries between past, present, and future become uncertain. Human figures, often altered and enigmatic, evolve in settings where poetry meets dystopia. Behind this unique aesthetic lies a reflection on memory, the fractures of society, and the uncertainties that accompany contemporary transformations. An artist beyond borders Born in 1951 in Belgrade, in the former Yugoslavia, Enki Bilal developed an artistic language very early on that escapes classification. Author of comics that have become references, he notably established himself with The Phalanges of the Black Order (1979), The Hunting Party (1983), and the famous Nikopol trilogy. His journey continued with the Monster cycle, the Blood Sweat trilogy, and more recently the Bug series, of which four albums have been published to date. His work is distinguished by a unique association between fantastic stories, historical references, and prospective visions. The artist observes the present, reinterprets it, and imagines possible futures to better question the evolutions of the world. While his work is recognised for the richness of its colours, monochrome also occupies an important place in his graphic expression, revealing all the strength of his line and the depth of his compositions. From comics to contemporary art Enki Bilal's approach extends far beyond the ninth art. Drawing, painting, cinema, and literature nourish a transversal creation that pushes the limits of traditional disciplines. Passionate about cinema since childhood, he has also directed three films. In 1990, he collaborated with choreographer Angelin Preljocaj on the ballet Romeo and Juliet, created at the Opéra de Lyon to music by Sergei Prokofiev. His artistic career has led to several major exhibitions, including The Ghosts of the Louvre, presented at the Louvre Museum in 2012-2013, Mécanhumanimal, at the Musée des Arts et Métiers in 2013-2014, and At the Frontiers of the Human, at the Musée de l'Homme in 2022. He also participated in the Venice Biennale in 2015 and 2017, confirming the multidisciplinary dimension of his work. With "Enki Bilal: The Exhibition", the Dar El Bacha Museum of Confluences thus offers a meeting between the Moroccan public and a work that blurs the boundaries between genres and eras.
