Marrakech paralyzed by violent bad weather

A deluge of rain hit Marrakech on Saturday evening, causing significant flooding that paralyzed several districts of the ochre city.

This meteorological episode, marked by intense rain, violent thunderstorms, and hail, quickly put urban infrastructure to the test.

Despite the efforts of municipal services to drain water through the sewer network, the rainfall was so voluminous that it exceeded absorption capacities, worsening the situation. Major road axes such as the Targa and Azzouzia districts, Avenue Mohammed VI, and certain areas of the Medina were submerged, making traffic difficult, if not impossible.

Videos shared on social media and picked up by the press show impressive scenes. Here, streets turned into torrents; there, vehicles blocked or swept away; and everywhere, residents trying to cope with the sudden rise in water levels. Some motorists found themselves trapped in their vehicles, and rescue services struggled to access the most affected areas due to impassable roads.

Many businesses and homes were invaded by water, leading to significant losses. This violent episode surprised a large part of the population, who were ill-prepared to face such extreme weather conditions.

This Sunday, Marrakech is trying to return to a semblance of normality: the streets still bear the traces of the flooding, traffic remains disrupted in places, and many residents are assessing the damage in their homes and businesses. The atmosphere is marked by shock, caution, and a slow return to daily life.
