Geneva – One of the essential references for contemporary art in Morocco with its exhibition spaces in Casablanca and Marrakech, La Galerie 38 is establishing itself in Geneva, becoming the first Moroccan art gallery to export itself internationally.
With this new space located in the very artistic Bains district of the City of Calvin, La Galerie 38 aims to be “a true bridge between the art scenes of Africa, Europe and elsewhere”. It is therefore this setting that it chose for its inauguration, a collective exhibition, “Anima Mundi”, showcasing the works of four African artists: Younes Khourassani (Morocco), Soly Cissé (Senegal), Abdoulaye Konaté (Mali) and Barthélémy Toguo (Cameroon).
“Today our Moroccan and African artists present an artistic expression that is so strong and universal that it seemed very important to us to present them abroad in a continuous and permanent manner”, affirmed Fihr Kettani, co-founder of La Galerie 38, in a statement to MAP on the occasion of the vernissage ceremony organised on Wednesday evening.
« With our Genevan associate, the Art Advisor Julie Fasio, with whom we have a long collaboration, we decided to open an exhibition space in Geneva, with the main objective of showing our Moroccan artists to the Genevan public, with a view to promoting Moroccan contemporary art in international spheres », added the other co-founder of the gallery, Mohamed Chaoui El Faiz.
Julie Fasio, for her part, highlighted the importance of this “great event”, noting that it is “the first Moroccan gallery to export itself abroad, more particularly to Europe”.
Furthermore, the choice of Switzerland, and more particularly Geneva, is very interesting in terms of the European art market. It is like a “gateway”, especially since the Bains district in which it is located is full of cultural and artistic institutions, notably the Geneva Ethnography Museum (MEG), the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMCO), which are located near the gallery, she added.
Now at the head of this new gallery, Julie Fazio infuses her expertise in European contemporary art, with a particular specialisation in geometric abstraction. La Galerie 38 Geneva thus becomes a crossroads of influences, a space for dialogue where Africa and the West meet and intertwine beyond apparent cultural divides.
La Galerie 38 Geneva will offer a demanding and eclectic programme, honouring painting, sculpture, installation and photography through exhibitions that will bring together emerging artists and essential figures of the global art scene.
More than just an exhibition space, it aspires to become a place for meeting and exchange, where sensibilities, aesthetics and artistic visions from diverse horizons intersect.
Faithful to its conviction that art knows no borders, it offers a framework where contemporary creation can fully express itself, resonating with the questions and aspirations of our era.
