The Wali of the Marrakech-Safi region, Governor of the Marrakech prefecture, issued a decision to close 31 hotel units and guesthouses for three months, due to non-compliance with the laws regulating the tourism sector.
The decision was based on inspection operations carried out by joint committees from local authorities, the urban commune, and the security prefecture. This inspection revealed clear violations manifested in the failure to respect closing times, disturbing neighboring residents, and other behaviors that negatively affect the reputation of the city of Marrakech and its tourism sector.
According to available data, the owners of these hotel units were previously warned to correct the situation, but their non-compliance led to the issuance of the closure decision. The decision included obligating the unit owners to pay the employees' wages throughout the suspension period. The Wali confirmed that any return to these violations in the future may lead to permanent closure, with those responsible bearing all legal consequences.
In the same context, the local authorities affiliated with the Jemaa El-Fna urban district launched on Thursday, December 5, 2024, a wide campaign aimed at liberating public property in the Medina. The campaign included areas experiencing chaos as a result of the occupation of sidewalks and public property by merchants and vendors. This step was considered a warning, with violators warned of taking strict measures in the future, including the seizure of goods and equipment.
These measures come within the framework of intensive preparations for Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations, where Marrakech is expected to receive large delegations of tourists, both from within Morocco and abroad, including international celebrities.
