Marrakech: Dazzling Opening of the 21st International Film Festival

The audience, in osmosis with this sparkling brilliance, shared a moment of emotional communion, where the glances exchanged between celebrities and spectators expressed much more than simple admiration: a deep connection around cinema. Every smile, every gesture, every selfie is a symbol of a shared passion, of a sincere love for the cinematographic art, which unfolded in all its beauty and diversity. It was a suspended moment, a celebration where cinema, in all its splendour, brought souls and hearts together.



The festival's opening ceremony created an immediate complicity between the great names of world cinema and a passionate audience, ready to discover the works that will illuminate this 2024 edition, which runs from 29 November to 7 December. This atmosphere, vibrant with emotion and sharing, was also marked by the arrival of the jury, placed under the presidency of the talented Italian director, screenwriter, and producer Luca Guadagnino. During his speech, the director of Challengers and Amore did not fail to share his deep attachment to the city of Marrakech.



Recalling his first visit to the ochre city in 2002, he confided: "I was carried away by the night of Marrakech. I immediately found my deep roots." "I am half Moroccan," he announced with emotion. For him, Marrakech and cinema are inseparable, carriers of mystery, beauty, and strength, values he associates with Morocco as a whole. "It is an honour and an immense privilege to preside over this jury," he added, expressing his enthusiasm to share this journey with the other members of the jury. These include Belgian actress Virginie Efira, Iranian director Ali Abbasi, Indian filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, American actress Patricia Arquette, Australian actor Jacob Elordi, British-American actor Andrew Garfield, Moroccan actress Nadia Kounda, and Argentine director Santiago Mitre. Together, they will have the difficult task of deciding between the 14 films participating in the official competition, works selected for their originality, their artistic impact, and their ability to touch spectators from all over the world.

Before officially declaring this 21st Marrakech International Film Festival open, warm applause was given to key figures of world cinema who came to share their experiences, such as Tim Burton, David Cronenberg, Justine Triet, and Monica Bellucci. Thus, under the stars of Marrakech, a new chapter of the festival is being written, promising vibrant discoveries and many moments of sharing and celebrating cinema.
