Civil society wants to co-produce cleanliness

"Co-production of cleanliness" is an integral part of the National Programme for Household and Similar Waste Management (PNDM), which aims in particular to restructure all existing wild dumps and organise the "Sorting-recycling-recovery" sector with a view to achieving 20% recovery and recycling of generated waste, with pilot actions for sorting at the source. Speaking on the occasion of the launch of this project, the president of the Marrakech section of the AESVT, Abdelhalim Fakihani, estimated that the success of this experience necessarily requires the involvement of all development actors and the local population, which remains an essential partner in this process. In this sense, a local steering committee will soon be set up with a view to ensuring monitoring and contributing to the success of the said project financed by the Swiss "Drosos" Foundation. This meeting, which took place in the presence of, among others, the president of the Marrakech-Tensift-Al Haouz regional council, Ahmed Touizi, and representatives of the wilaya, the City Council, and local NGOs, was the opportunity to announce the names of the model neighbourhoods in the field of waste sorting at the source. These are the Tamesna, Avenue Khachab, Jnane Al-Afia, Al-Wahda 4, and M'Hamid 5 neighbourhoods, falling respectively under the Ennakhil, Sidi Youssef Ben Ali, Medina, Gueliz, and Menara districts. Partnership agreements were initialled, on this occasion, between the representatives of the local actors of each targeted neighbourhood. Selective waste sorting at the source is certainly the keystone of successful management in terms of cost optimisation and respect for the environment. It is indeed essential to maximise recycling and reduce the volume of residual waste. Pilot experiments in selective sorting at the source have been launched recently by a number of urban communes across the Kingdom, notably in Agadir. The said actions have made it possible to considerably reduce costs and contribute to the cleanliness of the cities. "Support" mission: The "Co-production of cleanliness" project, which was launched last April from Demnate under the slogan "Clean neighbourhood: right and obligation", aims, in a first phase, to support the inhabitants and actors in some 90 neighbourhoods, 100 schools, and 20 national sites in 22 cities over a period of four years thanks to a progressive and continuous action plan for better management of household waste.
