The "Mawarid" Association for the Environment and Energy has called for June 8th to be a "Car-Free Day" in Marrakech, with the aim of offering a breath of fresh air to the locals and contributing to the building of a Morocco that respects the environment. This day aims to foster a collective awareness of the need to act against the nuisances generated by the growth of urban traffic and to improve the quality of life in Marrakech. It is an opportunity for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users to reclaim urban space for a day. The organisers are urging the people of Marrakech to contribute to the success of this initiative, which could turn the Ochre City into one of the great cycling metropolises of the world, such as Amsterdam or Copenhagen, especially since the enthusiasm for two-wheelers remains strong in Marrakech and the bicycle remains the undisputed star of the city, which incidentally houses the largest number of bicycles in the Kingdom.
They are calling on the population to enjoy the pleasures of cycling during this day, during which all alternative modes of transport to the car will be tested and will cross paths. This operation is the third of its kind for the "Mawarid" Association, which campaigns for the protection of nature, following the 2011 "Marrakech without plastic bags" initiative and the national "Morocco without plastic bags" campaign in 2012. Currently, the Ochre City is suffocating under the weight of a vehicle fleet that, according to the latest estimates, counts some 140,000 vehicles in addition to nearly 190,000 motorised two-wheelers, 80,000 bicycles, 3,500 taxis, 180 buses, 150 horse-drawn carriages, and 1,500 carts. Born at the end of 2009, the "Mawarid" Association aims to work for major causes related to the environment and energy, to anchor environmental values in the minds of the population, and to create a national ecological movement in step with global current events.
