Meeting on the safeguarding of the palm grove

Meeting on the safeguarding of the palm grove

The event was marked by four important presentations on distinct themes: "The irrigation system by Khettara" by José Garcia, engineer and former regional director of the National Office for Potable Water (ONEP); "The Gardens of Marrakech" by Dr Bahia Benkhar; "Treatment and profitability of the irrigation of the palm grove" by Adil Daoudi, director of the wastewater treatment and purification station at RADEEMA, and finally "The green spaces of Marrakech" by Abdelilah Middich, engineer, head of the plantations and green spaces service at the Marrakech municipal council. "Since its creation in December 2006, the OPM has remained faithful to its mission of safeguarding and protecting the Marrakech palm grove. The OPM has contributed to the palm grove regeneration programme which involved the planting of 450,000 palm trees, de facto improving the landscape of the palm grove, the irrigation of one of whose zones is a major challenge for its entire future, given the threat of drought that characterises it. To this end, the OPM has contributed to the realisation of an irrigation project undertaken by RADEEMA for a cost of 34 million dirhams," indicated Mohamed Chaïbi, president of the Association for the Safeguarding and Development of the Marrakech Palm Grove and the OPM. The latter stressed that opening the palm grove to visitors is considered a primary action in order to avoid any feeling of exclusion. The OPM has thus contributed to the creation of an equipped and secure pedestrian promenade over 5 km, thanks to the contribution of the Addoha, Palmeraie Golf Palace, and Ciments du Maroc groups.
