Tourism: Marrakech reconnects with recovery

Marrakech is finally breathing. The ochre city has resumed its tourist momentum since the beginning of the year. A pace that has been supported by the spring school holidays. These holidays have contributed particularly to boosting domestic tourism. The Regional Tourism Centre (CRT) of Marrakech is delighted with this performance, resulting mainly from the efforts of professionals in the sector, particularly through their presence at multiple international trade fairs and roadshows. The promotion of the ochre city has borne fruit, particularly in terms of air travel, which is the primary key to tourism success. According to reliable sources, Marrakech has currently reached 230 flights per week, which is 500 additional routes. This significant improvement in the attractiveness of Marrakech airport is also due to the strong measures taken by the ONDA over the past year. In this sense, the office has proceeded to lower fees and abolish the airport equipment tax. The ochre city will be ready on 22 April for the opening of the Ryanair base, which will operate with two aircraft from Marrakech to 22 airports in seven European markets. Namely Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Italy, and the Netherlands.

On the other hand, there is still a way to go in terms of occupancy. Marrakech has achieved, according to provisional data, a rate of 45% for the first months of the year, and this in all the city's hotel establishments.

The forecast occupancy rate is 65%, a target that will not be long in being reached if Marrakech continues at this pace of development. Furthermore, arrivals have climbed by 22% for the first quarter, i.e., 450,000 people having crossed Marrakchi soil. In the month of March alone, arrivals showed an increase of 17%. The ochre city has achieved a total of 1,250,000 overnight stays since the beginning of the year, an increase of 16%. In terms of market, France remains in the lead while Germany is in third position with arrivals up by 44%.

A whole seduction operation has been devoted to this high-potential market. Indeed, Marrakech has gone to conquer the Germans, through a roadshow organised from 16 to 18 April in Hamburg, Berlin, and Dresden. The promotion of Morocco's tourist assets, in general, and Marrakech in particular, was accompanied by a culinary tasting. "The objective is to strengthen the positioning of Marrakech as a destination for art and living culture that has assets that meet the expectations of the German clientele", it is indicated from the same source. And to continue that "the German clientele is a potentially important target in search of the sun, certainly, but also eager to discover other activities and to live a new experience".
