Cereal production estimated at 303,500 tonnes

The agricultural season for the year 2014 looks very promising in the Khémisset province. According to the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture (DPA), the forecast cereal production is estimated at 3,035,000 quintals for the 2013-2014 agricultural season. The area of agricultural land reserved for cereal cultivation amounts to 225,335 ha in the Khémisset province, of which 129,500 ha are devoted to soft wheat cultivation, 26,500 ha for durum wheat, and 58,500 ha for barley. The 2013-2014 agricultural campaign is taking place in a favourable climatic context, marked by heavy rainfall in comparison with previous years. Precipitation recorded, up to 7 May, 610 mm against 334 mm in the previous agricultural season, an increase of 82%. The 2013-2014 agricultural campaign saw the implementation of several support measures. These include, in particular, actions to supervise farmers by the Agricultural Work Centres (CT) throughout the campaign, through awareness days and demonstration platforms targeting better technology transfer, particularly in the areas of soil work, use of fertilisers, and selected seeds for weeding and phytosanitary protection of crops.

The DPA described the agricultural situation in the province as excellent for most crops, particularly cereals, stressing that the 2013-2014 agricultural season was marked by abundant and well-distributed rains. Regarding the marketing of cereals, the National Interprofessional Office for Cereals and Legumes (ONICL) also reports that during the first week of June 2014, the average purchase prices of soft wheat by collection organisations were supported and amounted on average to 257 DH per quintal.
