At the opening of this meeting, placed under the sign of the triptych "Inform, Understand, Act", the governor of the prefecture Hamid Channouri emphasised that the current state of this space requires the combining of efforts of all stakeholders with a view to making it a lever for sustainable development and a source generating income and job creation. He noted that the holding of this meeting, in celebration of Earth Day, is intended to reconcile the city with its wadi in order to rehabilitate it in accordance with the High Royal orientations tending to promote the use of clean and renewable energies and to encourage the green economy. The other speakers emphasised the importance of developing a coherent strategy for the development of the Oued Souss space both upstream and downstream in order to restore this natural corridor to its initial function and to establish it as a point of attraction and green tourism, given in particular the landscape riches it contains and the water resources it carries. This meeting, in which nearly 300 participants are taking part, is intended to be a platform for exchange and debate on the state of the Oued Souss territory, its potential, and the prospects for its development. This day was punctuated by the screening of two documentary films respectively entitled "Mobilisation of local associations for the cleaning of the banks of the Oued Souss" and "Towards the reconquest and development of the Oued Souss host territory". Broken down into four axes, the work of this meeting is articulated around a series of interventions dealing with the "Pre-diagnosis of the Oued Souss host territory and development approaches", "Biological reserves: witnesses of the past, guarantors of the future: Case of the biological reserve of the Agadir horticultural complex", "Evolution of the population and urban dynamics on the banks of the Oued Souss", and the "Integrated water management and development plan of the Arghane valley, Taroudant province". Also on the programme are presentations on the "Souss-Massa National Park, the Ramsar site of the Souss estuary: state of play and development programmes", "The role of Agrotech SMD in the Souss valley", "Waste management and treatment and composting opportunities", "Treatment and reuse of purified wastewater for watering green spaces in Greater Agadir", and "The role of associations in the development of territories". A presentation note for this meeting indicates that the Oued Souss territory is a space that extends over a linear distance of 180 km, along the Souss river to the mouth with a perimeter covering several hectares. This territory presents great riches due to its landscape value with large open spaces and spectacular views, significant ecological interest with the presence of diversified flora and fauna, and its proximity to the Souss-Massa National Park, an opportunity to develop income-generating activities (local products, organic farming, etc.) and a chance for the site to become an important pole of attraction and animation for green tourism. However, the same source specifies, the quality of the location of the perimeter of this territory and its immutability are weakened by uses and human activities often in disagreement with the nature of the place: it is noted that the spaces of the site have continued to close up, and many plots have been colonised to build clandestine and unhealthy dwellings. The document notes that agricultural activity has been largely reduced (such as the cultivation of mint, or even the famous "Tarrast" potato), adding that all this has been caused in connection with the urban explosion, the development of neighbouring industrial sites, and the development of commercial activities within the large Souk of Inezgane. The uncontrolled and accumulated landfills in this fragile space represent a danger to the environment with the health risks and nuisances associated with them, the document further explains, which observes that the environment has become a dump due to the lack of maintenance and development, due above all to the lack of involvement of the authorities and local actors. This awareness day constitutes an opportunity to attempt to present a state of play of this natural corridor, which has been neglected and marginalised in the land-use planning approach, while being an opportunity to invite all actors, elected officials, researchers, associative fabrics, media, and citizens, to mobilise so that an awareness takes shape, that solidarity blossoms, that dialogue is established, and that reflections are exchanged so that initiatives see the light of day.
