Top 12 cleanest cities in the world, Ifrane in second position

Ifrane, the ecological capital of Morocco, is the second cleanest city in the world after Calgary in Canada, reports the electronic newspaper "MBC Times".

The city of Ifrane obtained this ranking in view of the results of a survey on the quality of life which takes into account factors such as water availability, waste collection, the sewage system, air pollution, and traffic density.

"Having no industries, the air quality is optimal" in Ifrane, indicates the newspaper, which stresses that this city "is considered one of the cleanest cities in the world".

"The Ifrane National Park is a Moroccan natural park, one of the most representative for the richness of its ecosystem and its landscapes. It constitutes a preferred tourist hub for hikers and fishermen who practice this sport in a serene atmosphere", it notes, adding that this park, which covers more than 500 km2, notably houses the largest cedar forest in Morocco and encompasses a set of biodiversity-rich sites (Tizguite park, Val d'Ifrane: Vittel springs, Lake Daït Aoua, Daït Hachlaf, Daït Ifrah, Daït Iffer, and others), in addition to the ski resort in Michlifen.

The electronic newspaper notes that following the enormous demographic growth and the overexploitation of natural resources over the last 30 years, the world has experienced a "severe" deterioration of the environment, adding however that some cities, like Ifrane, "integrate economic growth and job creation strategies into their environmental programmes".

Beyond the beauty of the natural and urban landscapes, culture, or even gastronomy, there are enough reasons to visit these cities, "cleanliness being a bonus that we cannot leave aside", it stresses.

Regarding Calgary, ranked the first cleanest city in the world, the same source notes that this large "ecological city" is "very important" for its "pure" water flow and for the good use of it, specifying that the Canadian city has a wastewater treatment centre purifying up to 100 million litres of water per day, that it is powered largely by renewable energies, and includes a waste programme that aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.

The third city in this ranking is Helsinki, whose "main characteristic is cleanliness".
