The spiritual capital of the Moroccan Sahara, Smara, experienced, this Friday, December 12, 2014, one of the events that will have most marked the history of this city. From Agadir to Lagouira, the largest mosque has just been inaugurated, welcoming more than 7,000 worshippers, with an esplanade capable of accommodating as many people.
Considered a historical achievement, the new mosque of Smara reinforces the infrastructure of the city, which has experienced a boom in projects aimed at its urban rehabilitation in recent years, characterized by the opening of several construction sites.
The governor of the province, Mohamed Salem Sabty, accompanied by several local officials, elected representatives, chioukhs, notables, and several imams and scholars, performed the first Friday prayer in this exceptional building that will forever mark the contemporary history of the Kingdom and its desire to provide its Saharan provinces with all modern infrastructure.
Built on an area of 5,000 m2, with funding of more than 20 million dirhams, the great mosque is designed to accommodate more than 7,000 worshippers, in accordance with secular Moroccan architecture. It will also allow for the organization of conferences and the dissemination of knowledge, according to the Maliki rite. This will contribute to consolidating fraternity, solidarity, and tolerance. The opening of this building was welcomed with satisfaction by the inhabitants of Smara, who declared that this monument comes at the right time to attest to the title of spiritual capital of the Moroccan Sahara, attributed to Smara.
