A budget of 55.9 million DH is dedicated to the completion of several projects aimed at strengthening distribution structures, improving storage capacity, and ensuring water production in the Smara province, as part of the National Office for Potable Water (ONEP) programme for the 2012-2015 period.

According to data provided by ONEP, these projects include, among others, the construction of a semi-buried reservoir with a capacity of 3,000 m3 (10 million DH), another 500 m3 reservoir supplying the Rbieb housing estate (5 million DH), the reinforcement and restoration of the old Smara distribution network (15 million DH), as well as the wastewater treatment plant dedicated to boosting the efficiency of this network (5 million DH).

At the provincial level, the network coverage rate is estimated at 92%, with an annual production of 1.8 million m3 and a storage capacity of around 2,700 m3.

Regarding liquid sanitation, ONEP is working, within the framework of the delegated management agreement for the sector, to carry out the liquid sanitation project in the city of Smara for an estimated amount of 120 million DH, co-financed by ONEP (20 million DH), the Agency for the Promotion and Economic and Social Development of the Southern Provinces of the Kingdom (70 million DH), and the urban commune of Smara (30 million DH).

This project, for which the first phase of work began in February 2009, notably concerns the rehabilitation of the liquid sanitation network (30 million DH), the construction of the pumping station (6 million DH), the rainwater drainage network (more than 7 million DH), the rehabilitation of the old network (20 million DH), in addition to the construction of a wastewater treatment plant in the natural environment with a flow rate of 3,618 m3/day (45 million DH financed by the Agency for the Promotion and Economic and Social Development of the Southern Provinces of the Kingdom).
