With the aim of limiting the dangers of anti-personnel mines, tens or even hundreds of thousands of which are buried in the territory of the Saharan provinces, particularly between the provinces of Smara and Assa-Zag, the Moroccan Red Crescent has organised several awareness campaigns in Smara regarding this danger.
The latest campaigns, initiated in coordination with the International Red Cross, concerned the city of Smara and its surroundings, as well as the neighbouring rural communes such as Tifariti, Amgala, Rbeib Ballaou, Sabkha Khzeinatt, and the Sidi Ahmed Rguibi settlement.
These mines date back to the years of armed conflict in the Sahara. They are the cause of several deaths and disabilities, particularly among nomadic populations.
The rains of recent years have contributed to accentuating the danger of these mines by moving them to places where they have become invisible and more dangerous.
