About Beni Mellal

Beni Mellal is a town in Morocco between the Middle Atlas and the Tadla plain, in the centre of the country. Situated on the road axis between the imperial cities of Fez and Marrakech, it is open to the Moroccan south via the provinces of Errachidia to the east, Khenifra to the north-east, and Ouarzazate to the south-west. The town had 163,248 inhabitants in 2004. It is one of the most important towns in central Morocco, which, like other localities in the region (Zaouia ech Cheikh and Fkih Ben Salah), has developed thanks to the income of emigrants, the majority of whom are settled in Italy. Its Kasbah Bel Koush, built in the 17th century by Moulay Ismail, was restored in the 19th century.
