After years of hard work to ensure a peaceful standard of living, French retirees are opting for a haven of peace, and what could be better than Morocco? TF1 cameras captured the daily lives of French retirees settled in Morocco. In Agadir alone, there are nearly 4,000 of them, testifying to the country's appeal – particularly for its tax advantages – to those who aspire to a peaceful retirement outside of France.
A pleasant climate, breathtaking landscapes, picturesque Riads, fragrant mint tea, pristine beaches, and warm hospitality… all this is in addition to a standard of living suited to foreign pockets. On the other side of the shore, Moroccans are complaining about prices that keep soaring.
To enjoy a serene retirement, the French have made Morocco their third favourite place of residence in the world, as highlighted by the report from the show Sept à Huit broadcast on TF1 on 24 November.
In detail, the TF1 report indicates that in the city of Agadir alone, there are about 4,000 French retirees, "three times more than ten years ago," focusing on the daily lives of Nathalie and Yves, aged 62 and 64.
This couple from Marseille, who now live on 2,800 euros per month, rent a house in Agadir with a dining room, two bedrooms, a bathroom, a patio, and a 100m² garden: "A house like this costs 8,000 dirhams per month, which is about 800 euros. For electricity, we must be at 500 dirhams per month, so 50 euros, and then water is 50 dirhams," testifies Nathalie.
They are not the only ones making Morocco a low-cost refuge. All French retirees who settle there benefit from a tax exemption put in place by the Moroccan state, requiring only the opening of a bank account in the country. "A lady told us that with 1,000 euros per month, she had a rental, she ate, and even had enough to take a plane once a month to go see her children. We said to ourselves: 'Why not?'," explains Nathalie. And regarding the choice of city, Yves confirms that there is a gentleness of life in Agadir that one does not find in other cities in Morocco.
With its sun-drenched fruits and vegetables sold at low prices, Agadir thus welcomes a growing number of French retirees, most of whom are gathered in associations offering numerous activities or meals in restaurants.
