The Tanger Med port recently organised a communication meeting in Agadir with actors in the transport and export sector in the Souss-Massa region.
This meeting allowed for the presentation of port services and the strengthening of partnerships with various actors, notably exporters, shipowners, shipping companies, road transport companies, and with all economic actors in the Souss-Massa region, given the region’s potential in terms of production and export of fruits and vegetables.
In a statement to MAP, the director of import-export operations at the Tanger Med Port, Idriss Aarabi, indicated that holding this meeting in Souss-Massa reflects the strategic role that this region plays, particularly regarding the production and export of vegetables and fruits, as well as the significant number of international transport trucks that contribute to the export and transport of these products.
In this sense, Mr. Aarabi stressed that the Tanger Med port complex remains a global logistics hub connecting Morocco to more than 180 ports and 70 countries, offering a handling capacity of nine million containers, and 700,000 trucks and one million vehicles per year.
For his part, the secretary general of the Democratic Organisation of Transport and Logistics, Mostapha Chaboun, highlighted the importance of this exchange meeting which brings together the various actors and professionals of the transport and export sectors.
Souss-Massa is considered the leading region for the export of vegetables and fruits, representing 70% of all agricultural products exported at the national level, which makes this region an important hub for the export of these products through the Tanger Med port, he added.
During this meeting, the Tanger Med Port Authority presented the measures taken to support the development of export traffic, in addition to the significant investments made to strengthen processing and reception infrastructure, notably the launch of extension works for the Tanger Med passenger and ro-ro port, as well as the creation of a new platform for imports.
It should be noted that the Tanger Med port has become a crucial element in the dynamic of trade exchanges with Europe, since the international truck transport activity has contributed to connectivity with Spain (Algeciras, Barcelona, Motril, Malaga), France (Sète, Marseille), and Italy (Genoa).
It is considered the leading Moroccan import and export platform, given that it handles more than 50% of Moroccan exports at the national level on its own and approximately 97% of the total flow of international truck transport for Moroccan exports.
It is also an industrial platform for more than 1,300 companies generating more than 115,000 jobs.
During the year 2023, the result of the port complex’s activity experienced general growth. The volume of container handling increased by 13.4% to reach 8.6 million 20-foot containers, while the activity of international transport trucks increased by 4.1% to reach 477,993 trucks.
