Guelmim – The Regional Human Rights Commission of Guelmim-Oued Noun organised a study day in Guelmim on Wednesday on "The situation of oases in the region and prospects for sustainable development".
This meeting aims to enrich reflection on the state of oases in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region and to share experiences with civil society organisations interested in environmental issues in order to protect the tangible and intangible heritage in the oases.
According to the organisers, oases are considered a symbol of cultural identity and sustainable development and a precious asset in the national landscape, as they constitute one of the most important ecosystems that represent an essential part of Morocco's cultural legacy and natural heritage, adding that this importance of oases requires efforts to preserve and strengthen their role in sustainable development.
The President of the Regional Human Rights Commission, Ibrahim Laghazal, indicated that the issue of oases is one of the concerns of the National Human Rights Council, adding that the oasis, due to its historical, social and cultural significance, remains one of the pillars of Moroccan civilisation.
He did, however, lament the current fragility of the oases due to the impact of environmental, climatic, economic or social factors, which requires innovative solutions and scientific approaches developed by experts and the stakeholders concerned, according to him.
For her part, Lalla Mezliki, Vice-President of the Guelmim-Oued Noun Regional Council, noted that the oasis system suffers from several constraints and challenges, stressing that the 2022-2027 regional development programme includes a set of areas and projects, notably the rehabilitation and development of oases, the strengthening of social inclusion in rural areas and the development of water sources through the construction of dams.
The delegate of the National Agency for the Development of Oasis Zones and the Argan Tree (ANDZOA) in Guelmim-Oued Noun, Ahmed Forak, reviewed on this occasion the strategic vision for the development of oasis zones by 2030 as well as the agency's interventions to mitigate the impact of climate change in oasis zones and the management of water resources, combat desertification, reduce the effects of flooding and deal with fires in the oases.
